Chiang
Mai, the city of King
Meng Rai The Great established
in 1296. This is the 2nd larggest city in
Thailand after Bangkok. It is located
696 kilometers north from Bangkok at an altitude
of 310 metres above sea level. To the North
of Chiang Mai is bordered with Myanmar, and
connecting to the province of Tak in the south,
Mae Hong Son in the West, Chiang Rai &
Pa Yao in the northeast and Lampoon &
Lampang in the southeast.

Chiang Mai's geography comprises
of 71 % mountains and 31 % of valleys and
plains with the main stream of Mae Ping River
starting from the 3rd highest mountain in
Thailand at Chiang Dao National Park about
100 kilometres north from Chiang Mai.

In the year 2006, Chiang
Mai province has a population of 1,623,820.(49%
of male and 51 % of female) distributed in
22 districts. Amper Muang or Chiang Mai city
itself has 256,428 habitants. There are 1,287
villages of highland communities scattered
across many districts in Chiang Mai, making
up 71,970 households or 323,467 inhabitants.
The majority of them are from 13 ethnic backgrounds
including Karen, Hmong, Musoe, Lisaw, Akha,
Yao, Lua, Chinese, Burmese, Palong, Tai Yai
and Tai Lue. The majority of people in Chiang
Mai are Buddhist (around 91.8%). 8.2% subscribe
to other religions and beliefs such as Muslim,
Christian, and Brahmin, Hindu or Sikh.

The climate in Chiang Mai
is relatively cool all year round, with an
approximate temperature of 25 C. Temperatures
typically range between 20 C and 35 C. The
relative humidity averages 72%, and annual
rainfall is normally 1,200 mm
